Análisis de los discursos de instalación y despedida de los presidentes de la Asamblea Nacional (1999-2004)
Synopsis
This chapter analyzes the inaugural and farewell speeches of the presidents of the legislative branch during the 1999–2004 term, highlighting national issues that persist to this day, such as democracy, the relationship between branches of government, political representation, economic inequality, unemployment, social security, lack of potable water, among others. These speeches are framed within a five-year period marked by two significant milestones for Panama. On May 5, 1999, during the third general election of the democratic era, a woman was elected President of the Republic for the first time. On December 31, 1999, Panama regained control over the installations, administration, and operation of the Panama Canal, fulfilling the provisions of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties signed on September 7, 1977.
